Energy Drinks. It seems like energy drinks and coffee are everywhere these days. Everyone is looking for the quick boost in energy. But how much caffeine should you consume in one day? According to the CDC, the average adult should limit daily consumption to 400 mg of caffeine.

What is an Energy Drink? Energy drinks are beverages that contain caffeine in combination with other ingredients like taurine, guarana, and B vitamins, and claim to provide extra energy. They are promoted as products that increase energy and enhance performance. Energy drinks are the most popular dietary supplement consumed by American teens and young adults.
Are they bad? Research suggests that energy drinks can have serious health effects, especially in children, teenagers, and young adults. They have been found to improve physical endurance, but no evidence in relation to muscle strength or power. Excessive energy drink consumption may disrupt sleep patterns, create dehydration, and digestive problems. Some energy drinks have added sugar. Sugary drinks can lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol.
While Energy drinks seem like a quick fix for fatigue, the long-term effects can outweigh the benefits.
It's safe to have caffeine in moderation. Just remember these simple tips:
1. Drink Water. Drink lots of water to help hydrate your body. Drink water when you wake up, with meals, and before, during and after workouts.
2. Eat Protein & Carbohydrates. These will help boost your workouts and provide your muscles with energy needed to grow muscle and perform well.
3. Vitamins. Naturally occurring vitamins, such as magnesium, help your body produce energy. Vitamins can help with fatigue, and deficiencies in your diet.
4. Stay Active. Staying active and exercising can help increase energy.
Bottom line.
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. In small doses, consumption is not likely to have long term effects. Be sure to read nutrition labels to know exactly how many servings are in drinks that you are consuming. Read the ingredients so you know what other added ingredients are included. Try to limit your daily consumption and look for other ways to boost your energy.
