Don’t eat that… it’s bad for you!!

How many times have you thought this?
How many times have you stopped eating something or refused to buy something
because you think it is "bad" food?
How many times have you been told that that certain foods are bad when you're trying to lose weight?!
What if I told you there is no such thing as a “bad” or
“good” food. Really?
You probably think that I’ve lost my mind…. Right? But let me explain.
You hear talk about foods being good versus bad, and when that happens food becomes associated with a value. Or it becomes a category of absolutes. Like it is either right or wrong. It then becomes problematic in the sense of mindset and food restriction.
Like pizza is bad….we shouldn't eat that junk.
Or Ice Cream is bad... we shouldn't eat that junk.
By putting foods in categories of absolutes, it takes the individual out of the equation.
It also takes out the social and emotional aspects of food.
For example, maybe growing up your family ate pizza and ice cream on Friday nights. So every now and then you do the same thing with your family, because you enjoy it and it brings back memories.
Because it used to be a tradition, and you like the new memories it creates. It makes you happy to
spend time with your family.
Now, is this something you should do every Friday night... probably not if you are currently trying to lose weight.
The point of the matter is that food is much more than just good vs. bad.
Food is multi dimensional:
- nutrients it provides
- Emotions we feel around it
- Social aspects around certain foods
But having one treat doesn't mean you did a bad job or that you won't make progress...
It just might mean you needed to fuel another aspect of your soul to be healthy.
Because health is also multi dimensional!!
If you create a healthy relationship with food, it encourages a better mindset and can lead to better long term success.
So let’s stop identifying foods as good or bad!
As long as you are prioritizing whole foods, eating protein, veggies and drinking water, then foods in moderation can promote a healthy relationship with food. Long term weight loss success is easier to achieve when you have a positive mindset around food, and can start looking at nutrition as fuel for your body to perform at its best.
