The Truth about 10,000 Steps a day.

10,000 steps a day.

The real truth you need to know about getting 10,000 steps a day.

I am sure you have read or been told to get 10,000 steps a day, but have you ever wondered why that specific number.

Sedentary refers to someone who sits for long periods or who has little physical activity. Studies have defined sedentary as 5,000 steps a day. Studies have shown that sedentary people who exercise are just as high risk for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease as those who don't exercise. Sitting for long periods of time has a negative impact on your total daily energy expenditure and increase muscle breakdown.

Sedentary or sitting for long periods of time is problematic and an hour at the gym doesn't necessarily solve this problem.

10,000 steps is roughly equivalent to the Surgeon General's recommended daily 30 minutes of exercise. Researchers have agreed that 10,000 steps is a healthy number to aim for each day. So, 10,000 steps is just a recommended number for keeping you healthy and active.

So even if you are hitting the gym for a workout, you still need to be active throughout the day. Try to get 10,000 steps or 30 minutes of walking a day. If you have time for more, great! Again, this is just a recommended target for each day.

So, how can you get 10,000 steps in a day?

  1. Take 10 minute walks after each meal.

  2. Start your day with a 30 min walk.

  3. Set a timer on your phone to get up and move every hour.

  4. Ask a friend to take a walk at lunch with you.

  5. Kids have a practice. Walk while you wait on them to finish.

  6. Walk around your kitchen while you cook dinner.

There are lots of ways to fit in some extra steps throughout the day. Staying active and moving during the day helps increase your TDEE and helps prevent disease. Just remember to stay active and not sit for long periods of time without moving.

Now, get up and start moving!
