The Ugly Truth about Cheat Days

"Cheat Days" or "Cheat Meals"

I am sure you have heard someone say the term "cheat" meal or treat. This term gets thrown around a lot. Your friend posts a picture of their weekend which includes a double fudge sundae or enormous slice of pizza labeled as "Cheat Meal."

But there are common misconceptions about the term "cheat" meal, and if we are being honest a lot of confusion. So why is this a problem? or what is the confusion?

It becomes confusing when you no longer have a healthy relationship with food. It becomes misleading when food is viewed as good vs. bad.

So how do you know if you have a bad relationship with food?

Ask yourself these questions.

  1. Do you demonize certain foods?

  2. Do you associate your self-worth with a # on the scale?

  3. Do you workout to punish yourself for eating a "bad" food?

If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then you have probably developed an unhealthy relationship with food. One of the keys to figuring out how to eat relative to your goals is to have the right mindset around nutrition. When you can stop referring to your nutrition as a diet, and learn to eat foods that you love, then you have created a healthy relationship with food. Foods that allow you to have structured flexibility and allow you to still get results, then you have created a healthy mindset around nutrition. Foods that you love and that don't make you restrict yourself or make you give up your social life and family nights, then you have created a sustainable, healthy lifestyle.

So how do you change your mindset around nutrition?

  1. Stop describing foods as good vs. bad or "cheat". Once you can just view nutrition as a means to better health and overall performance, and stop creating unnecessary terms then you can have a better outlook.

  2. Stop viewing nutrition as "all or nothing" mindset. It encourages restriction of bad foods, and creates a guilty view of certain foods.

Nutrition is a means to create overall health and well-being, and to improve performance. With the right mindset around nutrition, it can be used to give flexibility and help you reach your specific goals. If you are confused about flexible nutrition, macros, and creating a lifestyle that helps you reach your goals, I can teach you.
